In a refreshing change of pace, I decided to make a kilt for each of my twin grandsons. They are 3.5 months old, and once I got some basic measurements it was all simple and fun. The bottom hem of the flannel shirt made a wonderful curved front edge::<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ihBtnxi2Gvw/Vr6Py2RzE-I/AAAAAAAAAjE/ewcfMmkRcro/s1600/IMG_0655.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ihBtnxi2Gvw/Vr6Py2RzE-I/AAAAAAAAAjE/ewcfMmkRcro/s320/IMG_0655.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Front and back. I took 5 pleats with two seams to hold them in place. All edges are hemmed with a tight zigzag:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VBIdnL_FfHE/Vr6Umigb02I/AAAAAAAAAj8/nWa4e1AiahI/s1600/IMG_0645.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VBIdnL_FfHE/Vr6Umigb02I/AAAAAAAAAj8/nWa4e1AiahI/s320/IMG_0645.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
One twin Matthew, the elder, is slightly smaller than Christopher the younger, so one waist is 17" and one is 19". I added extra snaps and width so they can grow with them for a while, and they did turn out great. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D1XyCsJB1Zw/Vr6Q3FHcDLI/AAAAAAAAAjM/PnjhLLHdLbI/s1600/IMG_0664.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D1XyCsJB1Zw/Vr6Q3FHcDLI/AAAAAAAAAjM/PnjhLLHdLbI/s320/IMG_0664.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Matthew:<br />

<br />
<br />
Christopher:<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This was seriously too much fun! I hope their birthday Mommy has a wonderful Valentine's Day birthday celebration!<br />
<br />
I also did a little of this, and at this writing it is sewn together:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tz6mYuUbuEE/Vr6SJxsZTzI/AAAAAAAAAjk/MK6UktXUyxw/s1600/IMG_0670.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tz6mYuUbuEE/Vr6SJxsZTzI/AAAAAAAAAjk/MK6UktXUyxw/s320/IMG_0670.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
made from these snow dyes:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gfoBgFwfq0k/Vr6SrUH20hI/AAAAAAAAAjo/HH8uWgbtwA8/s1600/IMG_0626.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gfoBgFwfq0k/Vr6SrUH20hI/AAAAAAAAAjo/HH8uWgbtwA8/s320/IMG_0626.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And I also did this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oiWBy_Z7NEc/Vr6TcPUbFNI/AAAAAAAAAj0/e3K4vvVLDYs/s1600/IMG_0661.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oiWBy_Z7NEc/Vr6TcPUbFNI/AAAAAAAAAj0/e3K4vvVLDYs/s320/IMG_0661.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
From the 4 twirled ice dyed pieces from the end run of my snow dyeing experience recently. You can find that entry previous to this one.<br />

I want to invite you to see the rest of the snow dyeing project. I just ironed out the last piece tonight and added the pictures to the album What is that red thing out there?:<br />

I would also like to invite you to look through my sketch diary. It covers ideas from a few years, some executed, some not, some are yet to come:<br />

"Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and days of Auld Lang Syne? For Auld Lang Syne, ma dears, for Auld Lang Syne, we'll drink a cup o' kindness yet, for auld lang syne"<br />
<br />
These words give me shivers, for they speak of the great flowing river of humanity of which I am a part. The turn of the year approaches, and a glance at the past twelve months is appropriate.<br />
<br />
In chronological order:<br />
<br />
A handquilted patchwork that just got finished and is a gift:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pegbniwXcE8/VnW80_Bv1II/AAAAAAAAAf8/mnXAR5ble6Q/s1600/IMG_7416.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pegbniwXcE8/VnW80_Bv1II/AAAAAAAAAf8/mnXAR5ble6Q/s320/IMG_7416.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Another patchwork that is in process:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
A strippy for handquilting, which is now in the hoop:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cGcpNkGdQ6g/VnW-6SxJmlI/AAAAAAAAAgU/2r2ieF0wrk0/s1600/IMG_7541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cGcpNkGdQ6g/VnW-6SxJmlI/AAAAAAAAAgU/2r2ieF0wrk0/s320/IMG_7541.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
"Ladybug Invasion!" :<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kqw89uRx3Lc/VnW_UYgS8RI/AAAAAAAAAgc/n5nSZTVBDyk/s1600/IMG_7604%2B%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kqw89uRx3Lc/VnW_UYgS8RI/AAAAAAAAAgc/n5nSZTVBDyk/s320/IMG_7604%2B%25283%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I revisited a decade old design:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z1LJ3XTLnT4/VnW_4Tn3zuI/AAAAAAAAAgk/xlVJboe05GQ/s1600/IMG_7818.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z1LJ3XTLnT4/VnW_4Tn3zuI/AAAAAAAAAgk/xlVJboe05GQ/s320/IMG_7818.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
"Golden Memories" in process:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L-uKYOa8kY0/VnXQooe4RQI/AAAAAAAAAhA/tc-oxGAFWB4/s1600/IMG_7814.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L-uKYOa8kY0/VnXQooe4RQI/AAAAAAAAAhA/tc-oxGAFWB4/s320/IMG_7814.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I began 'Memories of Roses' in mid summer when the wild roses are in bloom up and down the lane. I carved stamps, bought used black styled cotton shirts, use bleach discharge and then fabric markers or paint to create each tile:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
A quilt for my girl Gretchen, who had twins in October:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i9UKhJE7cM4/VnXaI_6-JVI/AAAAAAAAAiM/x-Zrt5DIrxM/s1600/IMG_0061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i9UKhJE7cM4/VnXaI_6-JVI/AAAAAAAAAiM/x-Zrt5DIrxM/s320/IMG_0061.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This is the last quilt I will finish in 2015, so I believe. It is for my beautiful grandaughter Jasmine:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jWmd_7n-X5A/VnXa36TU0GI/AAAAAAAAAiU/Iph3HFGcFbA/s1600/IMG_0165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jWmd_7n-X5A/VnXa36TU0GI/AAAAAAAAAiU/Iph3HFGcFbA/s320/IMG_0165.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I made this fabric twine yesterday:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T0gDr24Fj5k/VnXb1B60DTI/AAAAAAAAAig/5q6Ih4CAwpI/s1600/IMG_0290.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T0gDr24Fj5k/VnXb1B60DTI/AAAAAAAAAig/5q6Ih4CAwpI/s320/IMG_0290.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I stumbled over this and wondered how I'd missed it so long. Perfect for long strips of fabric about an inch wide, its a 'twist-twist-twist' away from you, then wrap it over the 2nd strand, towards you. Opposing tension, its like hand plying. Three S wraps one way and a Z wrap the other way. I found it here:<br />
<br />

<br />
Brilliant!<br />
<br />
I'm going to hook up with Nina Maries Off the Wall Fridays:<br />

So, if you are like me, you have a few gifts left to make for Christmas. I've been taking my sweet time, rolling the dice that nothing will come between me and the quilting I have to do to accomplish my holiday goals. In the meantime I haven't been idle. Here is an update on a previous piece. It is made from strips of cotton that I wove together and hand dyed, then mixed it with a gorgeous aqua blue, gold and olive African hand woven and dyed piece I'd been cherishing. Nothing else would do. It started with the search for the complementary fabric(s):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tHA9KeIxIOk/VmuC7h1xWKI/AAAAAAAAAfk/ahUjviX2QIM/s1600/IMG_0154.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tHA9KeIxIOk/VmuC7h1xWKI/AAAAAAAAAfk/ahUjviX2QIM/s320/IMG_0154.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Making fabric choices, I created a landscape background, but had no focal point for so much abstraction. It needed to be something more, or else why? Boring.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R8Ev9vt6B2Q/Vmt9BZI4e5I/AAAAAAAAAfM/yo7J_gEc8Kg/s1600/IMG_0178.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R8Ev9vt6B2Q/Vmt9BZI4e5I/AAAAAAAAAfM/yo7J_gEc8Kg/s320/IMG_0178.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So I removed the landscape background and decided on the one fabric I described above. I cut it into matching strips, alternated them, then removed one row of two alternating stripes, cut them into squares (7) and placed them about. I also had extra of my own hand dyed strips so I pared them down and made a geometric foundation and floated the squares across it, some up, some down:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lz-cHSRbGbY/Vmt9ynH4udI/AAAAAAAAAfU/v2sp04z_wAc/s1600/IMG_0237.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lz-cHSRbGbY/Vmt9ynH4udI/AAAAAAAAAfU/v2sp04z_wAc/s320/IMG_0237.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
It's all just fused now, hanging on the wall for scrutiny. I've used brown marker to shadow certain repeating areas, and would free motion brown in those same area to more well define the edges of the shadows. I'm satisfied.<br />
<br />
What do you think?<br />

Have a great weekend! I'm up to 2.4 miles per walk with my husband and have lost 2 lbs. My camera program, which had mysteriously stopped functioning properly, began to function properly, so now I will be taking nature photos again. I have albums on my Facebook page that you are welcome to browse, as well as loads more fiber art pictures from over the years:<br />

Happy December everyone, where busy hands are warm hands. It has been a crazy 6 months, and I have lagged on blogging, but first I was sick and then sick again, then vacation, next a set of twins came into the world and then it was Thanksgiving, and birthdays. So far 2015 is the best holiday season in a decade or more. I am busy now with sewing a few gifts, but if you know me at all, you know I have 5 projects and 5 books going on so here are a few less traditional, more art informed pieces Ive been doing:<br />
<br />
My response to the Paris attacks:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qPKcDDNzQfo/VmMP6O6guNI/AAAAAAAAAeo/lkknEYolOx8/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qPKcDDNzQfo/VmMP6O6guNI/AAAAAAAAAeo/lkknEYolOx8/s320/008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I used a hand dyed piece of sugar sacking, 15"x15", drew the Eiffel Tower with a permanent fabric marker and added the poppies with raw edge applique. I also wrote #Paris with the marker. Then black free motion for the Tower and the word and the centers of the poppies, and red for the poppies. There is no background quilting yet, but I bound it anyway with a red and black zigzag.<br />
<br />
<br />
And this is a combo of two different pieces of fabric: a lovely piece of aqua blue, gold and olive fabric hand made in Africa, and my own hand dyed strips. I used an unusual procedure to do my hand dyeing: I wove together all eight strips, worked the weave down to 3 strips like a woven triangle, then applied dyes as though it were autumn Indian corn. It came out a wonderful jumble of colors. Ive been fusing and slicing and dicing and it is almost ready to be all fastened down to the batting:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lO_K8-BMRxo/VmMR6RUlwYI/AAAAAAAAAe0/yn6rlulQeKw/s1600/016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lO_K8-BMRxo/VmMR6RUlwYI/AAAAAAAAAe0/yn6rlulQeKw/s320/016.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is my first look from above, so I will have to climb onto my step stool and make the changes that I believe are necessary. The design will be complete when I use a brown marker to create a shadowy floating effect to increase value and perspective, after fusing, basteing and spraying the whole thing to the batting. I will free motion quilt it, without a backing, because my old Bernina has a small space for bulk on the inner side, and I'd read that quilting without the backing lessened the bulk. That offers different options for binding, facing or finishing the edges too.<br />
<br />
This is my world today...I hope yours is happily productive. The sun is out and we're going for a walk later, down the Rails to Trails, converted coal train beds that now are home to walkers, joggers and official races. It goes through the western Poconos, near the Lehigh Valley and is all woods. My husband had a stomach sleeve operation and has lost 70 lbs and is walking up to 3 miles a day (I said he, I usually go 2 miles). So, we go. It's been very good.<br />
<br />

<span class="fbPhotoCaptionText">There are 3 shades of yellow overdyed with
turquoise, a couple fuschia overdyed with turquoise, for a total of 16,
15"x 15" squares:</span><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<span class="fbPhotoCaptionText">I believe the fabric is a length of
sugar sacking, a blend of
linen and cotten that I purchased in abundance at auction. I mix
primaries: 3 yellow, 3 blue, 1 red and 1 black, using MX dyes. I'll
rinse them any time after 2 hours; this time it will be 15 hours. The
longer the better, and I supersized the soda ash for instant strike
value. The dry fabric was stuffed in a ziplock, 1/4 cup ash poured on it
and scrunched til I was sure it was wet through, then wrung back out,
given a fluff and gently layered into its bag. I then squirted a yellow
all about, rubbing some to soften edges, and let them all sit in their
yellows for a couple hours. Then I went back in and squirted the
turquoise all over everything, again rubbing some to blur edges. In the
end I had 2 left and decided to go for fuchsia first with the turquoise
overlay. I added no water. I used gloves but didn't remember until I had
a nice orange stripe on my finger. I can't wait to see if my idea
worked. If it didn't it's because I may have rubbed too much. I'll know
in a few hours.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
This is the piece I dyed the other day, for another project, that gave me the inspiration for the above dyes that are in process:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XHkf-179VIA/VivLzKHAwoI/AAAAAAAAAeU/R8FslG1ROik/s1600/IMG_0060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XHkf-179VIA/VivLzKHAwoI/AAAAAAAAAeU/R8FslG1ROik/s320/IMG_0060.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
It looks like the treetops when you are looking directly overhead, I hope I got the current ones right. However, the job is done, the 'dye is cast' and they are what they are, Going to start rinsing now.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span class="fbPhotoCaptionText"> </span><span class="fbPhotoCaptionText">There is also one almost finished yellow quilt:</span><br />

Happy Summer! I wanted to share the finished surface design of Tiles I: Memories of Roses:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8KZe45hqmWg/VY4Zp4wD4nI/AAAAAAAAAb4/Kuuje5uNfpo/s1600/IMG_8473.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8KZe45hqmWg/VY4Zp4wD4nI/AAAAAAAAAb4/Kuuje5uNfpo/s320/IMG_8473.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So many different ideas came together to make this tiled surface. I've enjoyed every moment. Now that the last tile is fused solidly to the black felt batting, I have it hung on the wall while I think about how to quilt it. It won't be a great deal of quilting but the ideas are still mulling so its on the wall for contemplation.<br />
<br />
I've had to tear down my work area as we are about to list our cottage and property on the market and need to take pictures. It was timely to finish the surface work because I can leave up my sewing machine until we actually move and that means I can get the pile of unfinished quilts worked on. I've recently discovered that twin grandchildren are in my future, so there's that delightfulness. Plus other free motion work I want to do. It feels like good timing and I'm rolling right through the open door that will be bringing me home for good.<br />

I started 'Golden Memories' some months ago. I got this far:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YQhqbkkq2QQ/VXIkxgFddYI/AAAAAAAAAaY/Q5AfCXG_RIc/s1600/IMG_7814.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YQhqbkkq2QQ/VXIkxgFddYI/AAAAAAAAAaY/Q5AfCXG_RIc/s320/IMG_7814.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
At this point I was a bit stuck. Fortune smiled when I attended the April SAQA PA meeting. The suggestion was made to echo the far upper rightside, purple image. (Does anyone else say left when they mean right, and vice versa, too?) It reminds me of a shadowy sense of friends sitting together, part of which inspired the title's piece. Per the suggestion to echo the images, I am working on a stencil:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qSJmPD4948A/VXImCipdzRI/AAAAAAAAAag/pCfAmE66Atw/s1600/IMG_8388.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qSJmPD4948A/VXImCipdzRI/AAAAAAAAAag/pCfAmE66Atw/s320/IMG_8388.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The plan is to make the stencil using a razor cutter, practice a method of dabbing paint that will resemble the original, and then implement the design. I've thought of reducing the size and trying it in differing sizes and places. There really is only so much room for this treatment though, so I'd rather be editorial in advance, and see how it goes.<br />

Making tile patches is too much fun. I have been very encouraged by reading about medieval tiles. They seem quite similar to what I am making:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=medieval+tiles&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=gBtrVdSiDsK1sAT5yILoDw&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAg">https://www.google.com/search?q=medieval+tiles&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=gBtrVdSiDsK1sAT5yILoDw&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAg</a><br />
<br />
I have been stamping and discharging and painting and have made some great leaps forward. These results from SoftScrub cleanser are the best so far:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WrtUtBGbt4I/VWsPpDeZZpI/AAAAAAAAAZE/zA88T_kR6SQ/s1600/IMG_8301.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WrtUtBGbt4I/VWsPpDeZZpI/AAAAAAAAAZE/zA88T_kR6SQ/s320/IMG_8301.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SObML-lhbuE/VWsQZqYm8pI/AAAAAAAAAZU/KC2QWK87dwY/s1600/IMG_8302.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SObML-lhbuE/VWsQZqYm8pI/AAAAAAAAAZU/KC2QWK87dwY/s320/IMG_8302.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_soYlzGql3U/VWsQFC6nAoI/AAAAAAAAAZM/v3roitwuFcg/s1600/IMG_8303.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_soYlzGql3U/VWsQFC6nAoI/AAAAAAAAAZM/v3roitwuFcg/s320/IMG_8303.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
These have not been colored in with fabric markers yet, they are showing the pure discharge color. One of these shirts discharges to a rosy pink but I can't remember which one.<br />
<br />
Maybe I shouldn't have pinned them on yet since now I have to spread everything out to add these new ones:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v6TzwoeDRYU/VWsRh742aRI/AAAAAAAAAZk/ssGBwVR7rak/s1600/IMG_8309.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v6TzwoeDRYU/VWsRh742aRI/AAAAAAAAAZk/ssGBwVR7rak/s320/IMG_8309.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I will keep moving it about until I'm satisfied anyway. <br />
<br />
These new ones are painted with acrylic fabric paint:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-thRb5dUNndk/VWsUVSovDcI/AAAAAAAAAZ4/rOvGz1O-Afo/s1600/IMG_8299.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-thRb5dUNndk/VWsUVSovDcI/AAAAAAAAAZ4/rOvGz1O-Afo/s320/IMG_8299.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-trzmeg1pKxg/VWsUG93LuII/AAAAAAAAAZw/cwe6Y9_x48g/s1600/IMG_8305.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-trzmeg1pKxg/VWsUG93LuII/AAAAAAAAAZw/cwe6Y9_x48g/s320/IMG_8305.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
They are ready to cut out and place.<br />
<br />
Here is a new stamp I'm carving:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6WqNMa2YGHY/VWsXrZf8eWI/AAAAAAAAAaE/gtqIfPjX36Y/s1600/IMG_8285.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6WqNMa2YGHY/VWsXrZf8eWI/AAAAAAAAAaE/gtqIfPjX36Y/s320/IMG_8285.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
It's getting there. You can see a couple of tile patches with this imprint. <br />
<br />
So thats my week! What are you doing? I'll join this post to Nina Marie's Off the Wall Friday<br />

We were in Detroit for the week and shopped at the DAV thrift store in Westland. They have great selections there! I found these to add to my collection of cellulose men's black shirts:<br />

<br />
Washed and dryed and ready to be deconstructed. I love that word, deconstructed: " <span class="ssens">to adapt or separate the elements of for use in an ironic or radically new way; <span class="vi">uses his masterly tailoring skills to <i>deconstruct</i> the classic<i>." </i></span></span><br />

As for now I will use the small pieces for experimentation, determining how well each fabric responds to the bleach. The biggest whole pieces of each shirt are awaiting final decisions, and that pile is growing. </i></span></span><br />

Well, joining SAQA has certainly made an impact in my life already. The unexpected invitation from Paula Swett....dinner with the PA SAQA members and the gallery exhibition's opening night...the meeting with the PA SAQA rep, Meredith Armstrong at her home in Danville last Sunday. All day Monday I reflected on the rapid changes overtaking my life. I realized that it was time to move to the next level of original creativity. <br />
<br />
I started out the week with bleach discharge on my mind. A large piece of commercial fabric my mom gave me winked at me, and that always means something is coming. It immediately made me think of bleach discharge. Here is a picture of it:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dlHyGUx2r38/VTvexj6UadI/AAAAAAAAAVc/Vb7qO8T_g5c/s1600/IMG_7978.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dlHyGUx2r38/VTvexj6UadI/AAAAAAAAAVc/Vb7qO8T_g5c/s1600/IMG_7978.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I decided to carve a stamp resembling one of the flowers of the fabric:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jTfB0HOkdUA/VTvfWYFruxI/AAAAAAAAAVk/htcKZo5MH3A/s1600/IMG_7977.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jTfB0HOkdUA/VTvfWYFruxI/AAAAAAAAAVk/htcKZo5MH3A/s1600/IMG_7977.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I dug up a couple of existing retail stamps I had and used them plus the carved one to do this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mqWjMdL_b0o/VTvf_0YFxQI/AAAAAAAAAVw/q5bxwCMXaPo/s1600/IMG_7991.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mqWjMdL_b0o/VTvf_0YFxQI/AAAAAAAAAVw/q5bxwCMXaPo/s1600/IMG_7991.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Using deconstructed cotton shirts from Salvation Army, I tried my new stamp and a couple of others on the smaller yoke pieces. Some is from the collar pieces that were just wide enough to accomodate the smaller stamp. I'm saving the bigger shirt piecs for less experimental work.<br />
<br />
I started with Clorox cleanup, but of course it was too runny:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xo3Kt1ZCL8o/VTvg8di6FQI/AAAAAAAAAV4/S0vF4oFXjRE/s1600/IMG_7995.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xo3Kt1ZCL8o/VTvg8di6FQI/AAAAAAAAAV4/S0vF4oFXjRE/s1600/IMG_7995.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I ditched that, and because my Clorox gel pen was dried up I got some brand new Soft Scrub for the rest. The one above I re-discharged with the Soft Scrub, slightly offset to the original watery prints. It will be useful so I feel as though I saved a bad first job. Yay!<br />
<br />
In each case, to stop the bleaching action I used Anti-chlor, or Bleach Stop, 2 TBSP to the gallon of water. Rinse the piece first to get all the bleach residue off, then plunge into the gallon of bleach stop and stir it around on and off for a while. From start to finish it was probably 4 days. I didn't think I had gotten as good results as even these, so when they came out of the laundy and each piece came through I was heartily encouraged.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4ucehOR5Eno/VTvi88ixfEI/AAAAAAAAAWE/v13iM_cX-nc/s1600/IMG_7992.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4ucehOR5Eno/VTvi88ixfEI/AAAAAAAAAWE/v13iM_cX-nc/s1600/IMG_7992.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Not sure which technique interfered to make this interesting blend, probably batik remains that are resisting, giving a cool smoky violet gray pairing with the pale sanguine color left behind after the bleach had its way. This is why I do it, this cool unexpected thing that might happen just makes my day.<br />
<br />
The next few are from my hand carved stamp:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3bVvkFAG_Ds/VTvjtrAUNsI/AAAAAAAAAWM/2T8k4o_WGM0/s1600/IMG_7996.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3bVvkFAG_Ds/VTvjtrAUNsI/AAAAAAAAAWM/2T8k4o_WGM0/s1600/IMG_7996.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wv8GXfg_Dfc/VTvkL9iufVI/AAAAAAAAAWU/aVtuIXL4dqg/s1600/IMG_7997.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wv8GXfg_Dfc/VTvkL9iufVI/AAAAAAAAAWU/aVtuIXL4dqg/s1600/IMG_7997.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Tina Rey gave me the next store-bought stamp:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mxSYVY-8MH0/VTvkwMj4DII/AAAAAAAAAWc/ahad4zWh7GQ/s1600/IMG_7990.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mxSYVY-8MH0/VTvkwMj4DII/AAAAAAAAAWc/ahad4zWh7GQ/s1600/IMG_7990.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I took this piece and colored it in with fabric markers:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HihJVV8T1eQ/VTvonlj39qI/AAAAAAAAAWo/rj9BFdHW__Y/s1600/IMG_8002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HihJVV8T1eQ/VTvonlj39qI/AAAAAAAAAWo/rj9BFdHW__Y/s1600/IMG_8002.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I trimmed it and we'll see what happens next! Is it whole in itself, or part of a larger whole? That is the question.<br />
<br />
<br />
*******************************************************************************<br />
<br />
Here is a couple shots of my Pennsylvania Dutch lap quilt that I'm handquilting.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LE7uzjN44Ec/VTvql959bnI/AAAAAAAAAW0/REUQ3ulCb7g/s1600/IMG_7982.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LE7uzjN44Ec/VTvql959bnI/AAAAAAAAAW0/REUQ3ulCb7g/s1600/IMG_7982.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
I got all the center rings done! Now just the borders to do. I hope a certain someone in my life will love it when its done. I'm going to be finishing up a lot of my patchwork in the hopes of branching into a different fiber art direction. I am feeling more encouraged than I've been in years. <br />
<br />
I'm hooking up with Nina-Marie's Off the Wall Fridays...if you haven't visited her weekend blog, please do! Lots of people sharing there:<br />

I had the privilege of seeing some cutting edge art quilts at the Lore
Degenstein Gallery down in Selinsgrove, PA last evening. The opening
reception, Contemporary Fiber: Breaking Traditions, was delightful! The
gallery was filled almost to overflowing. Kate Themel spoke about
'Breaking Traditions', which is both the title of the exhibit, and the
raison d'etre behind art quilts. They are made to hang on the wall and
be experienced, lived with and loved. I didn't take my camer<span class="text_exposed_show">a
in because it seemed bad form, but I saw a few shots being taken with
phones, so I guess maybe there is no fighting that former breach of
etiquette. I'm going to search out photos that might be online of what I
saw: breathtaking color, line, texture and composition from all the
artists. They are: <a class="profileLink" data-gt="{"entity_id":"191790984176804","entity_path":"\/ajax\/pagelet\/generic.php:ProfileTimelineSectionPagelet"}" data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/page.php?id=191790984176804" href="https://www.facebook.com/PaulaSwettTextileArt">Paula Swett - Textile Paintings</a>, Kate Themel, Mary Pals, Katie Pasquini-Masopust, Meredith Re' Grimsley, Linda Colsh, Valerie Goodwin, Beth Carney, and <a class="profileLink" data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/user.php?id=721464157" href="https://www.facebook.com/susanshie">Susan Shie:</a></span><br />

I am very excited to be attending Studio Art Quilter's Association's new exhibit, Contemporary Fiber: Breaking Tradition. It is opening tomorrow (Sat) evening. Somehow I was fortunate to be invited by one of the artists to join them all for dinner before the opening. Today is the first day I could wrap my head around it. Most of the artists are quite familiar to me, although I haven't met any of them personally. But I will be. And they will discuss their work. It is a heavenly anticipation for an extra special experience. Less than 24 hours to dinner. Butterflies.<br />
<br />
We had a wonderful Easter, we had dinner at the rib joint with the family and most of our beloved. Good food and love and laughter! I came home refreshed and ready to continue quilting Cloister Garden:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w76_QhjWaW0/VSgrM-Tev5I/AAAAAAAAAUE/EpvJxY6Qlm4/s1600/IMG_7891.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w76_QhjWaW0/VSgrM-Tev5I/AAAAAAAAAUE/EpvJxY6Qlm4/s1600/IMG_7891.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Only the stained glass is quilted so far. Next up is to even out the black edges of the stained glass, then switch to jade green for the center quilting. I have decided on lines radiating from the center for the green.<br />
<br />
I found this watercolor hiding on the side porch and rescued it from
certain death. I painted this about 1999, while I was still in MI.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HkVYiN5WABc/VSgsNwKXTfI/AAAAAAAAAUM/nCBRcZY0Yrk/s1600/IMG_7887.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HkVYiN5WABc/VSgsNwKXTfI/AAAAAAAAAUM/nCBRcZY0Yrk/s1600/IMG_7887.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After my husband died, I first took an acrylic painting class, then moved to PA and taught myself a little watercolor and color theory. It was in 2000 that I realized painting wasn't satisfying me and I stumbled on the idea of miniature quilts. Bought a magazine, made a quilt for my Grammy all in purples ( I immediately colored out of the lines when I began, it was a traditional 2 color 9 patch and I bought 10 different purples to vary it). Then I started to learn about traditional quilts...and contemporary quilts...and art quilts....now 'modern' quilts. After 15 years I still can't get enough.<br />
<br />
Here are some things I'm studying on the living room walls, etc, right now.<br />
<br />
Fractured Iris, 2012. Hand pieced and machine quilted:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TmYorfpKxUM/VSgvQ-FpGgI/AAAAAAAAAUo/-_-plRG0Rik/s1600/IMG_7931.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TmYorfpKxUM/VSgvQ-FpGgI/AAAAAAAAAUo/-_-plRG0Rik/s1600/IMG_7931.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The small striped hexi centers (pupils) are from a thrift store shirt that was $3. The background is from a yard piece hand dyed by Katy Widger. Her hand dye method was one of the first I learned from, along with Ann Johnston and Paula Burch. The border and all triangle shapes are from Katy's fabric. I hoped to add a sense of the hexagons hovering by using it as bckgd/border fabric, purposefully using low contrast. All the other colors I used were chosen from that length of Katy's fabric. The fractured iris are all from my stash.<br />
<br />
<br />
This is a doll bed quilt that I made in 2001:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0Iq4XU1omAw/VSgugOK2OtI/AAAAAAAAAUY/JkVELxfS_I4/s1600/IMG_7930%2B(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0Iq4XU1omAw/VSgugOK2OtI/AAAAAAAAAUY/JkVELxfS_I4/s1600/IMG_7930%2B(2).JPG" height="320" width="291" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I made a couple of pink and brown quilts. After that time I made quite a few quilts utilizing 'patience' blocks, or a simple log cabin block with set in seams. It is also my first free motion quilting, in the large border. The rest is stitch in the ditch.<br />
<br />
This last one on the living room coffee table is factory made and has a larger companion that I hang on the porch. It was in the sweet little cottage that came when we bought the adjoining property along with a similar factory made 2 pc quilted schoolhouse block set. Lots of good stuff in that cottage! There is real linoleum from the bauhaus movement! Don't get me started because we are on the way out of here and I won't see how the cottage fares. It is loaded with vintage goodies, and stuff. I know someone will come here and love these things, and this place. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YdlJlW2nABQ/VSgusMw-Q-I/AAAAAAAAAUg/O8yvX4msb7Q/s1600/IMG_7932%2B(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YdlJlW2nABQ/VSgusMw-Q-I/AAAAAAAAAUg/O8yvX4msb7Q/s1600/IMG_7932%2B(2).JPG" height="297" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm thankful Spring has sprung:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
I planted snowdrops in a few places but this was the first flower spotted by John last week.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
These crocus were washed into the yard 3 years ago with the the flash flood accompanying the Leo-Irene hurricane combo of 2011. Now they have given us a lovely display for the 2nd spring in a row! There are more but one or two straggled about and I can't find them. Here they are before the deer ate them for Easter dinner:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RoDx-g5V9Go/VSg2p7pTBiI/AAAAAAAAAVA/ervaTz__GnU/s1600/IMG_7854.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RoDx-g5V9Go/VSg2p7pTBiI/AAAAAAAAAVA/ervaTz__GnU/s1600/IMG_7854.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Looks like a memorial with the brick I used to keep from squashing them as we walked about. I got right down on the ground with my back to the late afternoon sun to get this shadow effect. R.I.P.<br />
<br />
I was struck by the notion that if there had been a nuclear blast, those shadows would be permanently emblazoned on the face of the rock.<br />

Here is the next step I took with "Pile o' Leaves":<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m5NZspU2G8Y/VRbpP-2w9DI/AAAAAAAAATc/-M_38-FNcVg/s1600/IMG_7823%2B(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m5NZspU2G8Y/VRbpP-2w9DI/AAAAAAAAATc/-M_38-FNcVg/s1600/IMG_7823%2B(2).JPG" height="294" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Some years ago when I was doing a lot more hand dying, I developed an idea involving 3-5 overdyes and then bleaching out a design. It was started in 2005. The strips I chose to go with it are more of my multi-overdyed pieces. My style is to do 1/16 yd in ziploc or bread bags, using soda ash water and a pour over of one or more dyes. Low water immersion its called. I had a lot of fun doing that for a while. The past few years I've done a lot of simple tie dye, mostly for a friend. Clothes, sheets, blankets and a pair of curtains. There is a new order of blankets coming, so I have determined to also do some more complex hand dyeing with quilting fabric in mind.<br />
<br />
Since I have retired I find my mind freed up and the ideas coming faster than I can finish them. I've realized the importance of making art quilts with entirely original fabrics, hand dyed by myself. The only thing I don't do is weave the fabric. But starting from white cloth, these quilts are entirely my own, and that is satisfaction. Please, don't think I'm against prints! I love them equally, in a different way.<br />
<br />
Speaking of prints, this as yet unnamed patchwork is moving along too:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Pf9XaqTeXjo/VRbxvb8NbxI/AAAAAAAAATs/K6t3zVg47os/s1600/IMG_7827.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Pf9XaqTeXjo/VRbxvb8NbxI/AAAAAAAAATs/K6t3zVg47os/s1600/IMG_7827.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>

We're busy trying to get our cooking system going for the maple syrup making, so thats all for now, folks!<br />

I have been busy with new fabrics and whole cloth ideas, free motion quilting and patchwork. Here are some pictures and descriptions:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zicbXP-z2oA/VQy0s1n4PuI/AAAAAAAAASI/3OCmD-BtiT0/s1600/IMG_7775.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zicbXP-z2oA/VQy0s1n4PuI/AAAAAAAAASI/3OCmD-BtiT0/s1600/IMG_7775.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Lots of quilting being accomplished here!! It's lying on a bumpy mess so it looks less smooth than it is. I've named it 'Golden Memories" The quilting design is relatively simple and was easy to come up with. Inspired by cut glass, of which I am fond.<br />
<br />
And then there is this patchwork which is pretty much making itself:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eeAbWblkWT8/VQy2BT6s3oI/AAAAAAAAASU/grLZeT54Kb0/s1600/IMG_7720.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eeAbWblkWT8/VQy2BT6s3oI/AAAAAAAAASU/grLZeT54Kb0/s1600/IMG_7720.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm about 2/3 done getting all the blocks begun. It will be a log cabin variation of some kind or another.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I found this tonight and decided to take it to the next level:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QoXvm0tlX78/VQy2_WS7sWI/AAAAAAAAASc/PSUlwlPDUe8/s1600/IMG_7774.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QoXvm0tlX78/VQy2_WS7sWI/AAAAAAAAASc/PSUlwlPDUe8/s1600/IMG_7774.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
This started as bleached print cloth in 2005. I have a technique that involved dyeing and over dyeing complex colors, then bleaching out designs and painting dye back in using MX thickened with alginate. I didn't know what to think then except that I was pleased with it. Its been waiting til now. Tonight I took a fabric pen to it and concentrated on outline and negative areas and I think its ready for sandwiching and free motion quilting.<br />
<br />
My mom has been downsizing her fabric and as I slowly go through it I keep finding treasures. 2 whole lengths perfect for a matching front and back wholecloth, one hot deep pink in polished cotton and the other a rosier medium pink watered voile. Washed and set aside. You might find it silly that after 15 years as a dedicated quilter I am just now drawing my own quilting designs but its given me a freedom and direction that makes a lap sized Welsh style quilt do-able with free motion and straight line quilting. I do both on my Bernina, and am gaining confidence. <br />
<br />
I remind myself that my word for the year is 'Closure' and part of that includes finishing as many as I start. I made 7-9 quilts last year and suddenly there are few left. Not for long. Just gotta get em to completion.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hCwz1loCISw/VQy7CCEmqkI/AAAAAAAAASo/F-ZXGFt7ri4/s1600/IMG_7735.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hCwz1loCISw/VQy7CCEmqkI/AAAAAAAAASo/F-ZXGFt7ri4/s1600/IMG_7735.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The one above is a familiar face. I had a waking moment where I saw each smaller rectangle with a much much smaller white rectangle, upper right corner, half filled in and half empty, just white outline. I guess it wasn't finished after all. This is also all entirely hand dyed and thread painted.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
If you can get past the tie dye underneath, the fabric and patchwork are a cross over gradation of 36 pieces, from blue green to fuschia. I am slowly making half square triangle units using black with the colors. There will also be solid black squares and solid color squares. Its going to be a good sized patchwork. I am on the hunt for the complicated old fashioned pattern to set these blocks off to perfection. Well, all my perfection is wabi-sabi (imperfect, impermanent, incomplete...well mostly complete) so we'll see what we get.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j_nFq_fRAew/VQy_gMEERTI/AAAAAAAAAS0/GjgOoOn2r90/s1600/IMG_7726.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j_nFq_fRAew/VQy_gMEERTI/AAAAAAAAAS0/GjgOoOn2r90/s1600/IMG_7726.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And finally, a peek at what is under the tie dye:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ACWpVPlNv0k/VQzBkEJHTMI/AAAAAAAAATA/PV_S2CI7Xys/s1600/IMG_7727.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ACWpVPlNv0k/VQzBkEJHTMI/AAAAAAAAATA/PV_S2CI7Xys/s1600/IMG_7727.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
'Cloister Garden'. The quilting is started and ready to be continued. Soon enough! I change my bobbin almost every day; sometimes twice. Every time I go to finish one, a new one pops up!<br />
<br />
<br />
We are tapping our sugar maples for sap to boil into syrup. We have just begun with great potential for success and it's a new and exciting adventure. We had fresh maple sap boiled for our coffee the other morning. There was just a hint of something more and it was so delicious, and promising!<br />
<br />
I am hooking up with Nina Marie on her Off the Wall Friday blog too. Thanks again Nina! I love browsing with coffee on weekend mornings.<br />

Happy Spring! Soon the flowers will come out to play!<br />

<b>Patterns in Nature-Unconventional </b>was proposed as an art quilt challenge on Dec 1 2014, over on the Quiltart listgroup. Over three months the objective was given to take a natural pattern and interpret it using whatever chosen methods and materials explained the artist's purpose, at whatever size decided upon, as long as there were some quilting involved. These 7 artists responded. We hope you will enjoy their interpretations.<br />

Here on the Big Island of
Hawaii, the work of Madame Pele and the ongoing eruption of Kilauea
volcano is much on our mind. Evidence of previous lava flows are
everywhere, and an area of forest or a home, public building, cemetary,
beach, school etc that is there one day may be covered the next with
2000 degree molten rock. Disorganized lumps of sharp rock is called a'a.
When the lava flows in ropy smooth folds it is called pahoehoe. The
crust blackens as it cools but while it still flows the fiery inside can
be seen.<br />
<br clear="none" />
I used fabric painting, bleaching, metallic threads and bits of fabric to capture the fiery rock.<br />

"Patterns
in the world are visible everywhere. It is important to have that
connection with nature to appreciate all the different kinds you can
see. My inspiration for “Getting Schooled” happened during an
experience out on a boat. When the sun is shining, the shimmer and
ripples on top of the water formed beautiful patterns, but beneath the
surface, even more patterns revealed themselves through schools of fish
swimming below the surface. "</div>

ANCIENT WILLOW<br />
<br />
Size: 10 1/4” wide x 12 3/8” long<br />
Materials: Curtain linen and silk overlay on rayon geometric print, <br />
cotton, linen, Ultrasuede, yarn, beads, embroidery thead, batting<br />
Techniques: Scrunching, trapunto, hand embroidery, free-motion <br />
embroidery, beading, machine applique, machine quilting<br />
<br />
Ancient Willow is inspired by actual, enormous, ancient, bulbous, and <br />
bulging willows lining the pond in Greenfield Park in Greenfield, WI, <br />
a suburb of Milwaukee. I love the patterning of the bark which <br />
reveals decades of cold and heat, insect incursions, and the defense <br />
mechanism of the tree in its huge bulbous bumps.<br />

I chose symmetry as my inspiration and used my own Spoonflower designs
of symmetrically altered pictures of outer space, sunsets and the aurora
borealis. There is raw edge piecing and free motion quilting. The idea
of ladybugs came as that fabric was also one of my manipulated designs, and
seemed the perfect jumping off point. There is mostly mirror
(reflectional) and rotational symmetry exhibited here. In nature there
are many other types of symmetry. I wished I'd had more fabric to make it
bigger! It finished at 16" X 17"<br />

<a href="http://www.collegeart.org/pdf/fair-use/best-practices-fair-use-visual-arts.pdf">http://www.collegeart.org/pdf/fair-use/best-practices-fair-use-visual-arts.pdf</a><br />
<br /></div>
In the quilting world, as much as any world full of artists, there is a constant discussion about what is or isn't copyrightable, and/or copyrighted. Equally intense is the discussion of 'fair use vs originality'. The above link gets you to the cutting edge code of fair use practices. The link above is the entire pdf. Below is the part that will give artists the most interest:<br />
<br />
CODE OF BEST PRACTICES
When displayed, images should be accompanied by attribution of the original
work as is customary in the field, to the extent possible.
Images and other items in a reference collection should be augmented with
appropriate and reasonably available metadata.
Access to an institutional reference collection should be limited to persons
affiliated with the institution and its partner institutions, such as students,
faculty, and authorized researchers, subject to a requirement that items in the
collection should be used only for legitimate purposes.<br />
<br />
THREE: MAKING ART
DESCRIPTION
For centuries, artists have incorporated the work of others
as part of their creative practice. Today, many artists occasionally or routinely
reference and incorporate artworks and other cultural productions in their own
creations. Such quotation is part of the construction of new culture, which
necessarily builds on existing culture. It often provides a new interpretation of
existing works, and may (or may not) be deliberately confrontational. Increasingly,
artists employ digital tools to incorporate existing (including digital) works into
their own, making uses that range from pastiche and collage (remix), to the creation
of new soundscapes and lightscapes. Sometimes this copying is of a kind that might
infringe copyright, and sometimes not. But whatever the technique, and whatever
may be used (from motifs or themes to specific images, text, or sounds), new art
can be generated<br />
<br />
PRINCIPLE Artists may invoke fair use to incorporate copyrighted material into
new artworks in any medium, subject to certain limitations:
Limitations
Artists should avoid uses of existing copyrighted material that do not generate
new artistic meaning, being aware that a change of medium, without more, may
not meet this standard.
The use of a preexisting work, whether in part or in whole, should be justified
by the artistic objective, and artists who deliberately repurpose copyrighted
works should be prepared to explain their rationales both for doing so and for
the extent of their uses.
Artists should avoid suggesting that incorporated elements are original to them,
unless that suggestion is integral to the meaning of the new work.
When copying another’s work, an artist should cite the source, whether in the
new work or elsewhere (by means such as labeling or embedding), unless there is
an articulable aesthetic basis for not doing so. "<br />
<br />
***********************************<br />
<br />
Here is a 16 X 16" art quilt piece poised on the edge of quilting:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1aOobyieR1Q/VN6h9DLuBoI/AAAAAAAAALY/NOk8c9yT1_I/s1600/IMG_7551.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1aOobyieR1Q/VN6h9DLuBoI/AAAAAAAAALY/NOk8c9yT1_I/s1600/IMG_7551.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It's called 'Ladybug Invasion'<br />
<br />
Here's another, taking longer to get there:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h67qCrSvhUI/VN6ilty7jvI/AAAAAAAAALg/iRMEbCJSNAk/s1600/IMG_7507.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h67qCrSvhUI/VN6ilty7jvI/AAAAAAAAALg/iRMEbCJSNAk/s1600/IMG_7507.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
It's not right yet so I have more sky blue fabric ready to introduce to it. I may add some broiderie perse applique of the blue birds on it...haha another good idea. I find the objectivity of viewing my works in progress to be of supreme help in decision making. I wish I had as easy a time with quilting decisions.<br />
<br />
And last but not least, a lap quilt inspired by British Strippy quilts:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W9lsL0ryKjg/VN6j-z2-L9I/AAAAAAAAALs/BG7BPLpVufk/s1600/IMG_7541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-W9lsL0ryKjg/VN6j-z2-L9I/AAAAAAAAALs/BG7BPLpVufk/s1600/IMG_7541.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Underneath is a bed quilt from 2000. The strippy is not sewn together yet. But soon, very soon. I have a deadline, after which I will breathe easier! And, there's the added bonus of knowing that I will use Welsh quilting designs so I know it will get done. Maybe a Christmas gift.<br />
<br />
I will be hooking up to Nina Marie's Off The Wall Friday--thanks Nina Marie, its a place I haunt every weekend, whether I post or not. <br />

Happy Valentine's Day to you all!<br />

I have been fussing with Cloister Garden until I doubt there is room for more. There are two voices in my head, one says EDIT the other says go all the way and farther. Somewhere in the middle is the end of this design process. I'm ready to quilt it, esp before I start to lose interest. So far so good:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AgVjE30OwW4/VItggJ85PeI/AAAAAAAAAJY/Z2GQJI9pfz0/s1600/IMG_7353.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AgVjE30OwW4/VItggJ85PeI/AAAAAAAAAJY/Z2GQJI9pfz0/s1600/IMG_7353.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The quilting will bring out the cloister bldgs and help to balance the strength of the flowers. I believe. This is my second full on raw edge fussy cut quilt and I'm still teaching myself how to do it.<br />
<br />
I'm also working on a couple of small lap size contemporary quilts. One is utilizing some Pennsylvania Dutch fabrics I happened to pick up in my fabric ramblings:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IO9DlibQaZ8/VIti34jU_NI/AAAAAAAAAJk/yy5YfJFJfB8/s1600/IMG_7364.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IO9DlibQaZ8/VIti34jU_NI/AAAAAAAAAJk/yy5YfJFJfB8/s1600/IMG_7364.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I will want an Amish or PA Dutch style of patchwork so we'll see where this goes...probably simple...it is destined to be hand quilted in my 18" hoop. I'v gone through 3 different hand quilting projects, looking for a satisfying experience. I hope this is it or it will go in the pile of 'yet to be quilted' quilts. The idea for this quilt dawned on me while rummaging for the fabrics for this other lap sized contemporary:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sv1M6NC7--8/VItjuwOkaRI/AAAAAAAAAJs/sQh1UE_dPq0/s1600/IMG_7357.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sv1M6NC7--8/VItjuwOkaRI/AAAAAAAAAJs/sQh1UE_dPq0/s1600/IMG_7357.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This one will be a log cabin variation using those flowers each for the center of each block. This one could go either way, machine or hand quilting. Much will depend on how many seams there are. It's still just an idea but I am going to cut out those flower squares, next, no matter what. It's the best use of that 1/4 yard which is the most common size I buy.<br />
<br />
Here is one of my earliest quilts, made for a doll bed about 2001:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-thBYBrplzmw/VItk037QJZI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/JZcacAvYMA0/s1600/IMG_7365.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-thBYBrplzmw/VItk037QJZI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/JZcacAvYMA0/s1600/IMG_7365.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I know it's not close up but it might be my first free motion machine quilting, on the border, which makes it more likely 2000. I was in love with pink and brown quilts for a while there! My mom has my Chocolate Covered Cherry quilt on her bed, along with another I'd made for my step dad. None are actually bed sized. I just dont have the patience or the room. My very first quilt was a miniature 9 patch. I'm comfortable expressing myself in smaller sizes. <br />
<br />
Wishing you the celebration of Light!!<br />

Love, Sue<br />

Soon it will be the solstice, and so we begin to celebrate the returning of the light. My nod to the season is my big wreath out front, wired with lights glowing. I'll leave it on 24/7 til March, or as close to spring as John can stand it. I love to celebrate the season of light in every way I can. Am thinking of paper snowflake garlands and as we get a bit closer I may indulge in making a few lengths. <br />
<br />
The first thing I did when I came home was to make changes to Cloister Garden. It went from this:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gZZtqC6tG_A/VINcTY4513I/AAAAAAAAAIk/BwU0o8EdT1A/s1600/IMG_7293.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gZZtqC6tG_A/VINcTY4513I/AAAAAAAAAIk/BwU0o8EdT1A/s1600/IMG_7293.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
to this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tqX-En__ti4/VINkngKZDJI/AAAAAAAAAI0/j2ltDuaN1e4/s1600/IMG_7304.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tqX-En__ti4/VINkngKZDJI/AAAAAAAAAI0/j2ltDuaN1e4/s1600/IMG_7304.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
There's more but you get the idea. I'm about to layer the sandwich with basting spray and then finish the surface design. I have lots of quilting ideas and that is hugely encouraging. It also says I'm on the right path. I feel that way with this quilt.<br />
<br /> *******************************************************<br />
I also sandwiched up a quilt I made at a Kaffe Fassett workshop in MI about 10 years ago. I started to big stitch hand quilt it but changed my mind and took it all out when we got home:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JsCl8CLPMDE/VINle2LrNlI/AAAAAAAAAI8/QCJv8Fn_AB8/s1600/KaffeFassettWorkshop2006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JsCl8CLPMDE/VINle2LrNlI/AAAAAAAAAI8/QCJv8Fn_AB8/s1600/KaffeFassettWorkshop2006.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Instead I will machine quilt it. I feel confidence now that I didn't before and so it's in process. In line behind the yellow hand dyed quilt.<br />
<br />

I want to announce a new Quiltart challenge that I am hosting:<br />
<br />
<b>2015 Quiltart Challenge "Patterns in Nature"</b><br /><b>Due</b>: February 28 2015<br /><br />An unconventional challenge with no boundaries aside from these definitons of 'art and 'quilt':<br />
<br /><b>Art:</b> the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.<br /><b>Quilt:</b> Quilting "refers to the technique of joining at least two fabric layers by stitches or ties. In most cases, two fabric layers surround a middle layer of batting (cotton, polyester, silk, wool or combinations of fibers) which is a lighter, insulating layer."<br /><br />
Please reference this web page to peruse options to express Patterns in Nature:<br /><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patterns_in_nature">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patterns_in_nature</a><br /><br />Choose your pattern(s) and use unconventional means and methods to sew it together and then quilt it.<br /><br />
The materials are as varied as your imagination: thread, yarn, beads, paper, feathers, lace, cardboard, metal, findings, plastic, anything goes if you can make it go. Are you telling a story or sharing a vision? Does it hang on the wall or is it free standing? <br /><br />
Be thinking about why you do what you do, so that you can offer an artist statement. Be brief, add your name and location and email/webaddress and send with the finished pictures to me no later than Feb 28 2015.<br />
<br />
Send them to me at: <br />Please use only your original images.<br />No size requirement. The only requirement is that it must meet the standard of a quilt: 2-3 layers held together with sewing/tieing. Your materials may be as varied as your imagination. <br /><br />Email me if you're interested in participating.<br />

<br />
Cloister Garden is almost there. It is very fluid til its quilted down. I already see a change that will happen. This part is fun for me, but somehow, as usual, I feel like I'm doing the process backwards. I've cut large background rectangles which means unpinning most of it, but I shouldn't complain because I am happy while doing it. Then the sandwiching, and then the quilting begins. It's moving right along. I have the Sacred Threads deadline in mind.<br />
<br />
Here is Fritzy, one of our cats. She and Smokie drink from the glass pitcher on the window sill and pretty much no where else. They are fascinated with running water but not fans of being wet:<br />

<br />
They will be nine years old next month. They'd been abandoned in the street out front and we found them and they moved in.<br />

Hello friends! I thought I would give you a look at what Im working on this week. It is so helpful, objectively, to look at photos of progress.<br />
<br />
We went to the storage unit for some books and hand dyes that I knew were there, somewhere. It's amazing how a 5X10 unit can still take forever to search through! Its mostly all my books and bookcases, because of remodeling the cottage. There in the far corner, at the very bottom of the last milk crate, was 'We the Living', by Ayn Rand. It is my favorite of her work, and the inspiration for a white on white minimalist kind of art quilt that has been in the back of my mind for over a decade. I am closer to starting it, but not yet. The book I will read for the 3rd time starting this week.<br />
<br />
I also wanted some hand dyes, tie dyes really, that I thought might be good for big stitch hand quilting, and found 3, although not the one I wanted. Here is the one I chose for the project:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R0Uo7ASkgzw/VGjjHxrYQtI/AAAAAAAAAFo/o5LdKT_FEUM/s1600/IMG_7242.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R0Uo7ASkgzw/VGjjHxrYQtI/AAAAAAAAAFo/o5LdKT_FEUM/s1600/IMG_7242.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I use a spray basting method that works like a charm, for machine or hand quilting. My favorite spray is Alene's Crystal Clear Tacky Spray. I can't always find it, but over the past few years there has been a burst of similar products on the market so I dont have trouble finding one for my purpose without too much trouble. Here are the steps I take: Iron top and backing and lay out backing on a surface that is protected and washable. I use my bed and then wash the top blanket. Spray the backing thoroughly and lay the batting on top, smoothing it nicely. Then I iron it, backing side up. I rarely iron batting although I sometimes will hit it with steam from my iron and hover over it (only cotton, never poly or wool). Take the ironed back and batt back to the bed, batting side up. Spray the batting thoroughly. Lay the top carefully over the batt, smoothing again. You can reposition once or twice without messing up the batting. Then a thorough ironing, both sides, til it is crispy smooth and neat all around. I let it cure for a while, some hours to a full day, then sew away! I have made a number of small to lap sized quilts this way and I love it. <br />
<br />
The other piece I'm working on this week is a tapestry of broderie perse, or fussy cut appliques. I want to try for Sacred Threads, and so the inspiration is a cloister garden. I've added some of my Spoonflower prints, and have been alternately delighted and despairing all week as I attempt to put the puzzle together. I intend to cover the entire surface with cut pieces of fabrics and then quilt the whole thing down once I complete the surface. I used a similar method for my Dia de los Muertos and was so happy with the outcome, it made me wish I'd been working with that method for longer. Here is a picture of the progress:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LpT1-yvhDgU/VGjnG_G5ODI/AAAAAAAAAF0/sMQABKNuRAg/s1600/IMG_7248.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LpT1-yvhDgU/VGjnG_G5ODI/AAAAAAAAAF0/sMQABKNuRAg/s1600/IMG_7248.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I want to fill the open spaces with greenery and flowery fabrics. I refuse to despair, even though I doubt myself pretty regularly. If I ignore it for a day or two usually an idea or two will occur to me, and I try again. Having finished the day of the dead piece has really encouraged me to continue moving forward with this idea. <br />
<br />
Speaking of Dia de los Muertos 2014, we should be seeing the full results of our challenge uploaded quite soon, maybe even by the end of the night tonight. I know it is in good hands! Thanks again to all who participated! Can't wait to see them.<br />
<br />
I wish you love<br />

Hello quilting friends! <br />
<br />
Now that Dia de los Muertos is finished and on its way in the world I turned my attention to my work space. I hit a blank wall with the purple and orange 'winged square' quilt after I added the 1/2" dk purple border, so I hung it on the wall where I can study it for a while:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N2u7ZERmXdk/VF6yRA3-INI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/XJ6ulOUIn0k/s1600/IMG_7221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N2u7ZERmXdk/VF6yRA3-INI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/XJ6ulOUIn0k/s1600/IMG_7221.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I hung it up I saw exactly how I could quilt the large lavendar areas. That made me really happy. Beside it is the peach begonia that put on such a sumptuous show this summer. <br />
<br />
In order to make room for winged square to hang on the wall I had to take down :<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tO-0u4obWPk/VF6zDl9ET_I/AAAAAAAAAEY/c7w_nHwBtDc/s1600/IMG_7220.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tO-0u4obWPk/VF6zDl9ET_I/AAAAAAAAAEY/c7w_nHwBtDc/s1600/IMG_7220.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BSGJPk1wpFE/VF7FQTPKVEI/AAAAAAAAAFY/Vbp1NFgZEBA/s1600/IMG_5586%2B(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BSGJPk1wpFE/VF7FQTPKVEI/AAAAAAAAAFY/Vbp1NFgZEBA/s1600/IMG_5586%2B(2).JPG" height="320" width="291" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The fabric its lying on is the backing I pulled for it. First I will do more surface design contrast work, and then it gets the sandwich treatment. Then I'll add a border cut from the lighter backing material. I think I'll use 2 shades of purple and a grey for the quilting. For starters! <br />
<br />
I cleaned and oiled my sturdy old Bernina, she is strong and tough and ready to continue quilting this personal favorite quilt that is also all hand dye and tie dye:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--cV59KhfNmw/VF60R7-BU1I/AAAAAAAAAEk/WGYSiignCJ8/s1600/IMG_7218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--cV59KhfNmw/VF60R7-BU1I/AAAAAAAAAEk/WGYSiignCJ8/s1600/IMG_7218.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U2ZbDJqUWaE/VF64QKLc6gI/AAAAAAAAAE8/cy9aRS3SkCE/s1600/IMG_5744.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U2ZbDJqUWaE/VF64QKLc6gI/AAAAAAAAAE8/cy9aRS3SkCE/s1600/IMG_5744.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Above, the yellow tie dye quilt is lying on top of the third quilt I ever made. I was/am in love with Kaffe Fassett and it is one of his patterns. It was my first machine made quilt and the only bed size quilt I've made but its been on the bed at one layer or another since we were married, April 8, 2000.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QeTzbFD9AQc/VF65lgEeSHI/AAAAAAAAAFI/vCnAGMIHT_Q/s1600/IMG_6114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QeTzbFD9AQc/VF65lgEeSHI/AAAAAAAAAFI/vCnAGMIHT_Q/s1600/IMG_6114.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I enjoy quilting this yellow quilt, it's happy yellow is a favorite and lifts my spirits. I feel peaceful while I'm working on it. It is called "New Native American". <br />
<br />
I moved my cacti indoors for the winter and they are keeping me company across the back of the countertop. Under the ironing board/table el are begonia and geranium that I'll over winter in the cool kitchen with us. The sun shines on them every afternoon for a while and they seem very happy. Some are in bloom and have been for weeks. A few are gifts given years ago. They are good working companions:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IBud3JbyUhM/VF618ygx8fI/AAAAAAAAAEw/RqbHgayUD8Q/s1600/IMG_7219.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IBud3JbyUhM/VF618ygx8fI/AAAAAAAAAEw/RqbHgayUD8Q/s1600/IMG_7219.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
If thats not enough, I have the front and back of a 36 X 36 white wholecloth to be handquilted waiting at the back of my ironing board for a good jumping off point for the center. Art makes life good. I think once January gets here I will mix some dyes and see what happens. Hopefully nothing to the white wholecloth! I have a pile of different cottons and linens and the sugar feedsacks and maybe there will be batik involved. Mulling.<br />
<br />
I wish you peace!<br />

The Quiltart list is talking blogs at the moment. Perfect reason for a new post! <br />
<br />
I thought I would show a little of my inspiration for a challenge I participated in on the Quiltart list last spring. The challenge is called 'Outside my Window'.<br />
<br />
This is the view I see from my kitchen window. Just the lowest shrubs have leaves so this is mid April, still chilly out, and late
afternoon, perhaps 5:00 pm. There is an evergreen ground cover growing back there that was planted decades ago and has naturalized since then. It is center left, mid ground. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PnPEeJW9Kdo/VFEybAhhK0I/AAAAAAAAADk/jDMXUdXbBwo/s1600/IMG_5446.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PnPEeJW9Kdo/VFEybAhhK0I/AAAAAAAAADk/jDMXUdXbBwo/s1600/IMG_5446.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I had trouble with the angled trees, although they are plentiful, because
for some reason they detracted from what I perceived was the beauty of
the view. This was an early version:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iCNJyDFRnF0/VFE1ExKuFKI/AAAAAAAAADw/JNomPfE9dC8/s1600/IMG_5520.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iCNJyDFRnF0/VFE1ExKuFKI/AAAAAAAAADw/JNomPfE9dC8/s1600/IMG_5520.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Boring! Looks a bit like a Grecian temple =:o I knew there were good bones there so I didn't give up!<br />
<br />
Here is the finished version:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-twY5EVdhfbI/VFE9UiNyUsI/AAAAAAAAAEA/UXzfCaBqcbo/s1600/IMG_5767%2B(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-twY5EVdhfbI/VFE9UiNyUsI/AAAAAAAAAEA/UXzfCaBqcbo/s1600/IMG_5767%2B(2).JPG" height="306" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I woke up one morning with the plan for the rolled blind at the top all settled in my head. All the pieces came together easily and it was a joy to work on.<br />
<br />
Thanks, Quiltart list, for the encouragement to be involved! I had a good time!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.quiltart.com/">Quiltart</a><br />
<br />
It always feels good when everything comes together, like an open door, or window, letting the flow move unimpeded. I know retirement has freed up something vital in me and I'm grateful for that feeling...a certain lack of anxiety...because I'm enjoying artmaking so much more than ever before!<br />
<br />
I wish you freedom<br />

<br />
<b>Welcome, everyone!</b><br />
<br />
I've created this new blog with an idea of hosting online quilt shows. Our first challenge is Dia de los Muertos 2014, and is being followed by the artists on the listgroup over at Quiltart.com. I'm very excited about this challenge and am having great fun as my piece comes together! I'm going to share some random pictures to test the ability of the blog to handle multiple photos and text, so bear with me. Here is a sample of recent work, newest (tonight) to oldest (started last winter)<br />

<br />
All of these are going on in my kitchen, where I do most of my work. I finished 2 baby quilts in July and now its time to wrap some of these up too! It takes me much longer to decide how to quilt a quilt than any other thing. After years of hesitation and procrastination Ive realized....just do it. If I can work on two things in the same day I feel like I'm staying ahead of it. Who am I kidding? I love to be surrounded by so many of my babies in progress.<br />
<br />
Thanks for taking a minute with me, helping me to break in the new blog!<br />
